The Team

Mike Bray - Entrepreneur and co-founder of Modern Athlete, Penquin International, PenQuin Australia and SPMedia. He was also responsible for bringing global health franchise Boost Juice Bars to SA shores. Mike was an avid runner in school but then took an 18-year sabbatical after he discovered beer. He returned to running in 2004, having decided to finally pursue his dream of running the Comrades. He has now run 5 Comrades and the New York and London Marathons twice each. More recently, he invested in his first road bike and has taken up triathlon, doing several Olympic distance events. Mike has really enjoyed the move on to the bike and would recommend every runner give it a go. He took 4 min off a 21 PB and put the extra speed down to the high cadence work on the bike.

Craig van der Westhuizen - Entrepreneur and founder of Peak Timing. Craig joined the Modern Athlete team in 2013 and runs the magazine and events divisions. He has been running since 2000 and has completed 2 Ironmans, the MidMar 8 mile and 7 Comrades Marathons together with numeorus cycling events such as Argus, 94.7 & Amashova.

Raymond Travers - After studying public relations at Wits Tech, a career of more than 20 years in the media followed. This experience included magazines, newspapers, public relations and editing various publications and has resulted in a number of journalism awards along the way. A love affair with cycling started when a health scare prompted the purchase of a bicycle. Although strictly a mountain biker who constantly seeks single track heaven, a fascination with all forms of the sport has been developed since watching the 2011 Tour de France.

Lauren van der Vyver - Studied Journalism and Media Studies at Rhodes University in Grahamstown and obtained a BJourn degree in 2011. She specialised in writing and editing and has a love of photography. She is now combining her love of sport and writing at Modern Athlete. She is an avid hockey, soccer and tennis player and runs in her spare time, concentrating on 10kms and short trail runs. Completed her first 10km race at the Nike Run Jozi in 2012 and Cradle Mayhem Trail Run. Keeps running in local 10km and is looking at her first half marathon in 2014!

Keel Heubner - studied Human Movement Science in Pretoria pursuing a love for sports and exercise, then worked briefly in a large cycling retail store, where a passion for bikes was sure to follow and grow. Moved into the media environment and has worked on helping a number of companies and brands reach targeted, niche audiences in different publications since. Loves martial arts (the sport and the movie genre), eating well, reading and cycling with friends whenever he gets the opportunity.
